I want to make a fishing net in modeler, and it seems that a good way to
do it might be to make a two-dimensional subdivided box, kill its
polygons, and then connect up the remaining lattice of points with
two-pointed polygons.  Does anybody know of a quick and easy way to do this?

    This is a good start. Then bend the mesh around 360 degrees so that
you now have a columnar shape. Use stretch to shrink the size of one end.
Remove unnecessary points and and bones for realism.
